The thermal decomposition of nickel nitrate hexammine, Ni(NH3)6(NO3)2, has been a topic of interest in recent years due to its potential applications in ammonia storage materials. The complex process involves the breakdown of the material into its constituent parts, releasing ammonia gas and forming various intermediate compounds. In this article, we will delve into the details of the thermal decomposition process, exploring the conditions necessary for the synthesis of Ni(NH3)2(NO3)2 and shedding light on the structure of the proposed thermodynamically stable intermediate decomposition product, nickel diammine nitrate.

Thermal analysis is a powerful tool for studying the thermal decomposition process. In this study, we employed simultaneous thermal analysis, combining thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and evolved gas analysis by mass spectrometry (MS) to investigate the decomposition of Ni(NH3)6(NO3)2. The results show a complex decomposition process involving multiple stages, with distinct temperature ranges and corresponding products.

Our previously published method for preparing nickel hexammine, Ni(NH3)6(NO3)2, allowed us to characterize the material thoroughly. The successful preparation of the compound as a single phase enabled us to determine its crystal structure for the first time and perform vibrational spectroscopy analysis of its bonding.

In this work, we revisit the thermal decomposition of Ni(NH3)6(NO3)2 and identify the conditions necessary for synthesizing the respective diammine Ni(NH3)2(NO3)2. The proposed thermodynamically stable intermediate decomposition product, nickel diammine nitrate, has remained unknown until now.

The reaction between ammonia and nickel nitrate hexahydrate induces ligand exchange and the growth of nickel nitrate hexammine crystals. This process is crucial in the synthesis of metal ammine salts, which are attracting significant interest as potential ammonia storage materials.

In conclusion, our study provides a comprehensive analysis of the thermal decomposition process of Ni(NH3)6(NO3)2, highlighting the conditions necessary for synthesizing the respective diammine Ni(NH3)2(NO3)2 and shedding light on the structure of the proposed thermodynamically stable intermediate decomposition product. The results have important implications for the development of ammonia storage materials with high capacity and controllable release.
